Training & Capacity Building

Addison & Associates enables local authorities to improve their performance and outcomes through providing support and capacity building sessions.  We provide a wide range of both member and officer training and capacity building events.  The sessions are interactive and include a combination of presentations, questions, discussions and group exercises. 

Recent and current projects include:
Planning Advisory Service (PAS)
Addison & Associates have undertaken a number of training and capacity building projects with the Planning Advisory Service, these include:
Developing the current direct support common vision module.  This involved working with the local authority and key partners to produce stronger vision for improved place shaping and making.  This module develops work taking place within the authority and identifies future actions and support to help the authority achieve their aspirations for the community.  Mar 2009 please use web ink in publications page
Devising and facilitating a range of workshops aimed at officers or members to support cultural change and improved understanding the new planning agenda and how it can be delivered – including on development management, improving planning performance, engagement of stakeholders, and the Local Development Framework.

Addison & Associates are one of four suppliers who have commissioned to delivered the current PAS LDF Support modules within the PAS LDF 1:1 direct support programme to a wide range of authorities. The modules we can deliver are: 
Developing a “Common Vision” - working with partners (LSPs). 
Promoting strong, positive community engagement. 
Creating an evidence base. 
Generating planning options.

Improvement & Development Agency (IDeA)
Addison & Associates were commissioned by IDeA to support Cheshire West and Chester through the work programmes of the constituent authorities to agree and prioritise  human and financial resources for the new authorities Local Development Framework.  January 2009

West Northants Joint Steering Group
To support joint working across the four authorities within West Northants we have run a number of workshops to enable members to fully understand the new planning agenda and how they can more effectively collaborate to achieve their aims.

Leeds City Council 
Undertaking a review of the operation of the decision-making processes within development management.  This included evaluating the operations of the Plans Panels, interviewing with key stakeholders and the facilitation of a workshop with members and officers on the effective running of the Plans Panels.

London Borough of Islington
A review of the development control area committee process including an independent and objective evaluation of the operation of the four area Planning Sub-Committees to seek to improve the perception of the public and applicants of the process and to improve outcomes.  This was followed by training of chairs and vice chairs.

Other relevant projects:
Addison & Associates has previously undertaken considerable training for both officers and members on a wide variety of subjects including; probity, the new planning system, local development frameworks, integrated working and travel planning.  These training sessions are designed to increase officers and members understanding of the subject matter and improve working practices.
